Homesick: My Own Story by Jean Fritz

The Journey That Saved Curious George – The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H. A. Rey by Louise Borden

This book, filled with photographs and other artwork, chronicles the escape of H. A. and Margret Rey from France to Brazil to the United States during World War II. Parents may want to note that H. A. is often depicted with his pipe. RL 6, GRL: X

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas Wiggin

Rebecca Randall, an irrepressible young orphan of Sunnybrook Farm in Maine, is sent to live with her two elderly, unmarried aunts. They hope to be “the making” of her, but she also changes them. While there are serious moments, readers will also appreciate the lighthearted ones – playing with friends in a secret spot in a meadow, a far-fetched plan to sell soap to buy a lamp for a neighboring family, and her surprise invitation to host a missionary family in her aunts’ home. This classic is filled with rich vocabulary. Parents may want to note that chewing tobacco is mentioned a few times, there is talk of schoolgirl romance without specifics being mentioned, and some assumptions made based on ethnicity that the narrator points out are wrong.
